When everyone started raving about the original Danish version of The Killing, I decided I’d watch that before the American remake. What happened, though, was that before I’d gotten around to making the effort to get my hands on the Danish version, the American one started on TV and I thought, “oh, I’ll make do with this”. It was a big mistake. So although a big part of me was tempted to allow Fincher to introduce me to this world, I decided to watch the original first.
And it was very good, I thought. There’s maybe not a lot about it that steps outside or stretches the genre, but even as someone who’s not big on crime thrillers I found myself thoroughly engrossed. And Lisbeth is a pretty badass character to hang a trilogy on, so I’m actually looking forward to seeing the other movies and what Rooney Mara does with her in the Fincher version.
Solid.
